Greetings,

Sometimes when I am batch creating large numbers of subproducts on a product that has many options, it does not create all of them. Is this a bug or are there specific limits to the number of options and/or subproducts? Anyone?

In order for us to know for sure what's happening, we'll probably need to be able to replicate it and debug it directly, so please submit a regular support request for that. In general terms though - there isn't a hard set limit on the number of Apparel Subproducts that can be created during the Batch Process. That said however, when there are several Option Groups and a large number of Attributes involved - the chance of the script timing out is a possibility. Do you have any ballpark figures for cases where you've seen some of the Subproducts not get created? (e.g. the number of Option Groups and Attributes assigned to the Parent Product).

This particular item has 5 option groups and a total (across all option groups) of 28 options.

Actually, the distribution of Attributes among the Option Groups can significantly alter the number of Subproducts that get created for just a single Apparel Product. To illustrate, if your Attributes are spread among the 5 Option Groups as follows:

3 - 4 - 5 - 7 - 9 (= 28) - then a total of 3,780 Subproducts are created (3x4x5x7x9)

However, if your Attributes are spread among the 5 Option Groups as follows:

5 - 5 - 6 - 6 - 6 (= 28) - then a total of 5,400 Subproducts are created (5x5x6x6x6)

In either case, it's a lot of Subproducts for just a single Apparel Product, and a unique record must be added to the Products Table in the database, so we suggest a relatively conservative approach when deciding how many Options Groups and Attributes are assigned to an Apparel Product.

One way to significantly reduce the number of Subproducts is to take even one of the Option Groups out of the equation and make separate Parent Products. For example, in the second scenario, you would have 5 separate Parent Products representing the first Option Group, and then each one would only have 1,080 Subproducts. Although the total number of records in the database is the same, the possibility of a timeout error is drastically reduced.

Yes, I've done that in a few cases. Wherever possible I am trying to keep the number of main products lower to keep the clutter down on the site but I may have to split this one up.
