Author: slinc
Subject: 2340
Posted: 29-September-2009 at 12:28am

This is kind of late but wanted to comment on what we have done. Product Cart's Custom Fields are useless if you can not assign multiple values such as "Color" --> "Red","Green" and "Blue". We had been waiting for this feature but it didn't really work good when delivered.

After a lot of thought we decided to create a "tagging" system in product cart where we can tag products with keywords and then use these keywords to do all kinds of filtering, categorizing, etc.

We have completely removed the "category" feature in ProductCart with a tagging system. For example, we can tag a product with "Polo,Red,Blue,Green, short sleeves, etc". We can then create categories on the fly like "Red Polo's", "Green Polo's", "Short sleeve Polo's", etc. This system allows us to create new categories on the fly without ever having to go into each product and add the products to the new categories.

What makes this so good is that we can have lots of good SEO friendly categories with long descriptions, titles, meta, SEO friendly urls, etc.

This has ended up being much more flexible than any other way we could do it.

For example:

Custom Search Field Category : By Use

By Use > Boat
By Use > Carpet
By Use > Tile & Grout
By Use > Glass

A multipurpose cleaner should be able to have all of these as custom search fields. Right now it appears that only one can be selected user the "By Use" category.

hope this makes sense.
