We're running environments spanning 2000 through to 2012 and haven't found any generic issues upgrading db's from 2000 to anything greater. I'm running 2012 - just deployed a new box a couple weeks ago. I might hold off a little while. In brief, we discovered that after a restart of SQL Server 2012, there is a bug that causes the auto-generate identity key to jump as much as 1000. This manifested itself after a recent restart in store order numbers having a surprising gap.

I don't think this is a show stopper, but clearly annoying and inconvenient. Sorry I didn't notice that it was the express version. I agree with Mark on that one. Mark, what do you think of the web edition. We are actually migrating from 2000 to 2012 shortly and will be using the web edition. I asked Rackspace support and they said that it the same as standard minus replication stuff

Without going into a tremendous amount of detail as this topic which has been covered in the forums quite a few times, suffice it to say that SQL Express is a "Development" database platform that is built on the current architectures (SQL2005/SQL2008) and has very limited functionality.  It truly is designed and meant for development use only (and is ideal for that purpose).  Keep in mind that even Microsoft states that SQL Express is not suitable for a public-facing production DB.  Just do not do it!
 
If you are in a situation where you do not have access to the full version of SQL, then you really need to be looking for a different host or server provider that includes these options.  We can certainly help you out there and would do a fantastic job at keeping your store running with the right software and OS backbone.  There are also several other hosts on this forum that and take care of you as well ... Greg at Greybeard, Sean at WMS, Netprofits, Jolt Digital .. to name a few.   The point is that you will always be much better serverd using a provider that not only understands your software application but also has the correct infrastructure to keep it running. 
 
Sorry to be candid here but after helping many customers over the years correct issues that arise form trying to use Express as a front-end public facing production platform, against all guidance form the developers of ProductCart, developers such as myself, and even Microsoft, I guess I am a bit jaded on this issue.

In the product cart installation guide Early Impact says no to SQL Express. Is there any particular reason?
