I'm sure it's just a setting that's been set wrong, but I'm stumped....

Inventory is working, in that if we have 12 of something and 2 sell then the system will correctly report that we have 10. - The issue is if we have 0 of something, and permissions are set to allow backorders and a customer places an order, the inventory after the sale will still be 0, instead of -1 as it should.

As you can imagine, this has caused some minor disasters inventory-wise, and I'd like to figure out what setting controls this?
