Has anybody figured out a way to add a fee based upon products purchased and destination shipped?

We need to add an $8.00 eWaste fee to certain items (those with LCDs) shipped to customers in California. Short of sitting down and writing custom code, I haven't seen a way to do this. Anybody have any ideas? I am in the process of upgrading our store to v4 if that helps.

Thanks a lot!

Hi,
It's worth investigating "Tax by Zone" which I believe will meet your needs. The big caveat is that the $8 would be included within "Tax", rather than as a "Fee", although with some suitable text I would think that should probably be clear and acceptable to your customers. In reality this is a Tax anyway!

I was talking to my husband about this issue, and I'm glad I'm in Oregon so I don't have to deal with this at this point, nor do we sell electronics.  The problem I see that this only effects CA at this point, but it may become an issue in other states eventually.   You would need to put a disclaimer on each product effected, stating that this charge will be triggered once at checkout and only for CA.  Otherwise you may get some customers complaining about a surprise charge at checkout.  I already see a complaint from someone sending a gift to CA.  I was more thinking of a mandatory apparel add on, but you would again need to know where the item is going to.  Good luck with this issue.

Thanks for the suggestion, Hamish. Unfortunately, after checking it out, I see it won't work because we have to use the tax database for California. Doing business in CA can be an expensive, complicated pain in the backside.

From the lack of any other ideas it's looking like custom coding might be my only option for now.

Hi,
In that case, one option for achieving it would be to create a hidden category and add the items with an LCD to that category. Then code some SQL to examine the contents of the basket to see if they are in the hidden category and apply the charges as necessary.
Please note this is completely off the top of my head, so may well not be the best approach.

Hi,
Are you based in Califonia? If not then you do not have to charge the e-waste fee.

I'm in the UK so we don't have this problem (yet) but I can see problems with your customers if you start applying automatic charges this way.

Although my suggestion requires a little bit of extra checking on your part I do believe it will be received more favourably.

Add a compulsary product option to the products that attract this fee so the customer has to check one of the boxes which would read:

My product is being shipped to Calfornia so I need to pay the ewaste fee - add $8
My product is being shipped to a state that does not charge an ewaste fee - add $0

This way the option only appears on the products that attract the fee and your customer knows whats happening. It's one extra checkbox for customers shipping outside California but not a great intrusion.

You just need an extra check to make sure your packages going to California have checked the correct box.

Anyone have ideas as to how to prevent certain products from shipping to California at all?  We can't ship live plants to CA but can ship all non-plant items.  If I use the delivery zip code setting, it eliminates all shipments to CA so I need a product specific solution.
