Hi there,
Will be starting in product cart soon but am looking for an appropriate server to run it on. Can somebody tell me if it will be ok on this windows server: http://order.1and1.co.uk/xml/order/ServerWindows;jsessionid=51EAEAEE678E9DFAE6D5CA891670C928.TC30b?__frame=_top&__lf=Static Thanks everyone |

Hi Jask,
Are you going to be running a very high volume site, or want a dedicated server for other reasons? For new sites usually a shared server is sufficient, switching to a dedicated server when traffic levels rise far enough to justify it. I'd definitely recommend using an SQL database, which ideally would be on a separate server - which is how most shared hosting is set up anyway. |

Thanks Hamish,
The site will be a high volume site - so am going down the dedicated server route. does the 1&1 server cover both your recommendations, it has SQL Express as the DBMS (unsure if this is a good enough sql database system to run product cart). Also unsure of whether it is on its own dedicated server |

ProductCart should not be used with MS SQL Express. SQL Express was not designed for a "production" environment and there are reports of substantial performance issues, which is why many Web hosting companies do not offer it. MS SQL Express was designed to help developers create and test applications that use MS SQL without having to purchase a MS SQL license.

That hosting plan does not come with space on a shared MS SQL database server. Ask them whether that is available and for how much. It should only be $10-$20 a month extra. You will need at least 50 MB of MS SQL database space (MS SQL 2000 or above).

You definitely don't need a dedicated Windows server to run a ProductCart-powered store. There is a section of this forum dedicated to hosting ProductCart-powered ecommerce stores. There are some good ideas and discussions there.
