Backordering/partial shipping

   Am I just been really dumb here or is it not possible to ship half the amount of product to a customer and back order the other half?

Lets say a customer orders 20 screws from my store and only 10 are in stock. I want to send 10 now (and charge the customer) and then send 10 later and charge the rest. I really cant find a way to this after a lot of trying. What on earth am I missing?
