Howdy
Is there anyway to change the captcha routine, back to the old one, or use images like v3.
We are having a lot of customers complain that its too hard to read and takes them a few goes to get right.

Thanks

Rob

Rob  ... (and EarlyImpact)

I concur 100%.   Just finishing up upgrading two of my customer sites to Version 4 and of all the things I like about V4, the CAPTCHA is Not one of them.

I hate to say it EI because you know I am your friend and trusted SQL go-to guy, but you really dropped the ball on this CAPTCHA implementation.

I did not really like the old CAPTCHA a whole lot but it was much definitely much better than the V4 implementation in that you could read it (underlying technology implementation aside).

There are a handful of CAPTCHA systems out there that are written in classic ASP and one of my favorites is on by CJWSoft.  Here is the link to his site:

I am not in any way trying to plug this system rather just giving an example of one that I use on my own static site (and have implemented on a few customer sites) that I have found to be nearly bullet proof and very cool.

Just a side thought from a tired developer at 2:AM ... I am going to bed now.

Hi,
The Captcha can be configured to adjust it's look, I'll add a link on the WIKI to the following page which describes very nicely how to modify the look of the CAPTCHA.

Mark,

We respectfully disagree. The current implementation works well and is customizable (Hamish, thanks for updating the documentation!).

Popular implementations such as http://recaptcha.net/learnmore.html could not be considered due to licensing issues.

We disagree that the CJWSoft implementation would have been a better choice. Visually, it would not blend with most Web site designs.

It was late and  I may not have been typing my point clearly nor completely ... I was not by any means suggesting that EI should use CJWSoft by any stretch - rather, I only offered that as an ready-example of a CAPTCHA that is 'very readable' under all circumstances and that there are many others out there that are equally readable and bullet proof.

I sincerely apologize for not being clear on that point (are we still friends?).

I did take a look at the css customizations that are available and it does offer some level of control over distortion and shading.  I guess I am in that crowd that is just not a fan of garbled CAPTCHA letters and having to hit the 'new set' button multiple times to get something I can read.

I can live with it but I predict we will be hearing from others on this topic over time.

Hi Mark,

We always appreciate any feedback. We never have any problems with negative feedback. If we disagree, however, we'll let you know and indicate why

In this particular case, we looked for something along the lines of recaptcha. recaptcha is in use by over 100,000 Web sites and was recently acquired by Google. It's pretty much the standard when it comes to CAPTCHA.

We would have used recaptcha in ProductCart v4 if it weren't that there were issues (at least at the time) with its use in a licensed, dispersed application like ProductCart.
