I am running Product Cart 4.1 SP1. I seem to have a lot of errors on a daily basis, as follows:

Source: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server
Description: Timeout expired

In the Knowledge Base there appears to be a fix for this by changing the storeconstants.asp file. However, my storecontstants file doesn't look anything like the one shown in the fix. Just wondering if this is an old fix and if is there a new one I should be trying or any other suggestions for running without these errors.

Thanks

This is curious.

Have you actually experienced one of these timeouts? Was it while doing something intensive in your control panel?

If something's timing out on your front end, it would be better to address the issue than to band aide by extending the script timeout.

Ok, that's a really bad sign.

What about viewcategories.asp?

Anyways, it's timing out when your customers are viewing pages, and this is really bad.

Who is your host?

Can you provide your domain name so that we have have a look?

Are you using custom search fields?

Host is crystaltech
Not finding anything on viewcategories
No custom search fields.
caninedesigns.com

So is this a hosting issue and not a product cart issue? Maybe I need to move. Error free at WMS?

Oh, Hi Sally.

I don't mean to suggest that it is a hosting issue, but it's a possibility(for instance, the dreaded GoDaddy hosting). Crytaltech is a reputable host, though.

I popped into your control panel to look at the errors; indeed, a ton of these timeout errors on product pages. Something is definitely not right.

I clicked around on your site hitting product pages from various places, and while it could maybe be a little snappier, I didn't see anything suggestive, and didn't get anything close to a timeout error (though there is something wrong with your viewcategories page).

It doesn't look like an issue with the application itself, but I recall that you had an issue with the product page when upgrading to 4.11, so let me know if it's ok if I swap out your product page files with out of box 4.11 files just to rule out anything there (but I doubt that's it).

Find out from Crytaltech if your hosting account is in a dedicated application pool. Given that I don't see any evidence that the issue is with the application, that makes the hosting environment suspect.

We had that issue with our past host, and it is not a good thing when customers experience it.  They put us one a semi dedicated server and we still had some issues.  They extended the server time and it worked better. Eventually it got worse again.  I guess their were putting to many customers onto that server.  We are now with joltdigital.com.  They are specialized with product cart and know their stuff.  The switch was the best thing ever, they even transfered all the files from the old site to the new one free of charge.  Before we even had time out issues running sales reports.  It's all gone now and the site runs fast and smoothly.  I'm sure there are other good hosts, but I'm talking out of our experience.

Thanks so much for the wonderful help Sean. You are super! Yes, please go ahead and swap out those files. It could be that. I am not on a dedicated pool but I can be. It got complicated so I'll be in touch.

Your input was most helpful too katharina. Greatly appreciated and good to know that I'm not the only one experiencing this.

Hi Sally,

Well, if your sites not running in a dedi application pool, that's the first thing you should change, as that means the performance of other sites in the general application pool can affect the performance of your site even if there's nothing amiss with your application itself.

I'll swap out the files, but I'm 98% sure now that the issue is with your hosting environment.

Hi Sean,

I'm trying to change to a dedicated pool. But I need to change the database from 2005 to 2008. Anyway I need your expert help but your phone is doing the same as my database - and I can't reach you.

Don't worry about swapping out those files.

Thanks
