Hello everyone.  I hoping someone can shed some light on the setup of ProductCart 4.  I am a designer by nature, so please be patient with me... =)

My company's current site runs ProductCart version 2.7 and we are upgrading to version 4.  Rather than take the upgrade route, as the current version has been needlessly modified many times, we decided to start from scratch with version 4.  So we purchased version 4, installed it in a sub-directory so that we can iron-out the wrinkles, and utilized a copy of the existing database.  The setup was a breeze, but when we logged-in for the first time, our new home screen is a error page, but with no info as to what the problem is.  We completed the troubleshooting and everything looks to be OK. 

My questions is, can we use the existing database for the new version of ProductCart, which was used in ProductCart 2.7 for 6 years, or will we need to create a new database and import all of the info over.

Any help is appreciate.

Hi Mike,
 
You really should create a new database and run the PC 4 database script to create the SQL database. Then export data from 2.7, modify it as needed to match the new import specs and import it into PC 4.
 
The reason for this is that there have been MANY updates to the database over the past several years with each minor and major revision. The 2.7 database will not have any of those changes and you will most likely experience errors in many areas of the store.
 
The other option, which is probably more work, would be to walk through every manual upgrade from 2.7 to 4.1 SP3. After you login to the control panel after each upgrade is installed, it will run a script which will update the database accordingly. That would alleviate the need to export and import data.
 
If you go this route, just make sure you have a complete backup of the site and database before you start in case you encounter any issues.

I second Dan's advice, and would tend to lean toward the second idea - running each of the database upgrades.
 
I'd do it this way - submit a support request to EI and ask Cedric for Database Updaters.zip.  That contains all of the update scripts from your version forward. Run each sequentially, or engage a developer to assist with this procedure. 
 
At the end, your database will have been brought forward to current levels, your sales history and product data will all be preserved, and no need to mess with importing products.
