    Posted: 05-January-2011 at 2:05pm
I've tried updating items via a CSV file using the product import wizard. My concern now is I want to bulk update the SKU's of my products. I don't seem to make it work using a CSV. Here's what I currently have in my CSV file:

SKU     NEWSKU
1-1     001-01

I want to map the NEWSKU to the SKU field in the database but I'm getting this error message: "Some of the mapping instructions are overlapping. Please make sure that the database fields are mapped uniquely."

Please advise how to go about this procedure of bulk updating the product SKU's using a CSV file. Hoping for your response soon. Thanks!

the documentation for importing products is in the WIKI:

Could you point us to where you find a reference to "newsku" and how that might be a supported action with the documentation?  I don't recall ever seeing that option.

Also, it's not necessary to cross-post the same topic in mulltiple forum categories please.

thanks for the response, greg. i just added the newsku column in my csv file because that would be the source of my "new sku" update. what i'm trying to do in step 2 (map fields) of the product import wizard is to map the sku column in the csv to the sku field in the database and also to map the newsku column in the csv to update the sku field in the database. this doesn't seem to work.

is it possible to bulk update the sku using a csv? if so, please advise. thanks!

I'd have to test but I don't think that works that way.  If I recall correctly it's actually the SKU that is the key by which all other fields are updated, and I don't think SKU can be altered via CSV import.

Perhaps EI will offer confirmation one way or the other.

I have a client who just went through a similar revamping of SKU numbers.  I think he used a direct query to pull that off.  If you need such assistance you might want to engage a developer.

if bulk updating sku's doesn't work in CSV, is there any other way to do so? i have about 5,000 sku's that i need to update. i'm hoping there's a way to batch update it instead of doing it one by one via the control panel. please advise. thanks!

well, as I say, a client just did that using a query. I didn't get into the details of how they did that but he works for Microsoft and is very technical.  Before he did it himself we had planned on building a tool that would use a spreadsheet - somewhat similar to what you are attempting.  Then he knocked it out and didn't need our help.

If you would like such a tool created please contact me directly via my site, or any of the other developers on EI's partner page.
