    Posted: 03-May-2009 at 2:01pm
Hi,
I can create categories, sub-categories, assign part numbers to them , and all the appropriate categories are shown when "Browse by Category" is selected.  This is all working well.

My question is, can I create a category and not have it shown in the "Browse by Category" page?  But at the same time be able to link to it from the left navigation?

Here is an example, say I have two categories, one for rings and one for pendants.  Some product in these two categories are gold plated.  I want to be able to provide a link in the left navigation for "Gold plated Jewelry" but not show a "Gold Plated Jewelry" category on the "Browse by Category" page.  (There would be too many "material types", etc. and clutter the page.)

I tried creating a category and assigned the category as "hidden".  Then I linked to it with the category id (.../viewCategories.asp?idCategory=39)  but that didn't work.

Maybe assigning a category is not the way to go... all I really want to do is create a link to query my product database for products somehow assign to "gold plated".

Thanks in advance for any help,
Jon

Hi John,

That's correct. Using categories is probably not the most efficient the way to go in this case. The way to go is to use Custom Search Fields: http://wiki.earlyimpact.com/productcart/managing_search_fields

You can link to search results based on a specific Custom Search Field by simply performing that search in the storefront (from the Advanced Search Page) and then using the URL loaded in the browser address field as the address that you link to.

This should work well for you.

Thanks for the quick reply... enen on a Sunday!!

I created the custom search field "material" and assigned products to it.  I assigned it to all my parent categories (not any sub-categories),  it seems to work very well and fast.

One question though, is there any way on the search results page to NOT show the "Search Result by Category" section?   It seems to show the sub-categories that I don't have checked and they don't make much sense unless they are listed under the parent.

Thanks again for the great support!

There is the following documented method. We updated this article to provide a quick tip on how to affect searches through a querystring (or a hidden form field value):
