It seems that certain larger vendors are charging sales tax when shipping to certain states like California. Right now PC has the option to create tax exemptions by product and category, but it would be nice if vendor / drop shipper could be added to that list.

This came about because a drop shipper of ours says they have to start charging us sales tax for California. We dont want all orders to be charged when they are shipped to California and we have 100s if not 1000s of products for this vendor.

I used to live in CA and sales tax varies by county and city.  Not sure how that can be accomplished.  That's the reason why the Internet sales tax hasn't gotten to far yet.  Now they are talking about a flat percentage rate of sales tax nationwide.  Got the feeling that this may be coming soon, especially with the scramble for fundings etc.

Hi Ben & Katharina.
A tax data file will cover the taxes at a county/city level. See http://wiki.earlyimpact.com/productcart/tax_data_file
Ben, if your being charged tax by the drop shipper I'm unclear as to why you wish to make an exception for them. Regardless, this would need some custom code to achieve,

I'm in Oregon, a state without sales tax.  I bailed out of CA as fast as I could.  LOL  I don't have drop shippers, so it doesn't effect me at all.  I just dropped my thought into it.  Still it's nice to know that you do have a tax data file.

Hamish, the exception would be that when a certain drop shipper is used, charge x %in state A and X% in another state. For example, Im in Florida so we charge tax for FL orders. We now have a drop shipper that is charging us when they ship to California (but its only from a certain dropshipper and not all).

Does that make sense?

Ben, are you quite certain that for sales outside FL you must collect sales tax?  Do you have this on good authority from a CPA or the tax board?  I was under the impression, and have FL clients, that only sales to ship-to addresses in FL are due from a FL-based merchant.

Hi Ben,
I guess it depends if the Drop shipper has a presence in California.
The problem arises that it is possible that different drop shippers can and will have a presence in different states. What I don't know is whether the tax is due because they are doing the shipping even though it is you that carries out the sale, or whether it's your company location(s) that is the crucial decider. That would be for a tax specialist to determine. With the possibility of the products being shipped from multiple different drop shippers within the same order then the complexity gets very high and this scenario (different tax rules for different drop shippers) is certainly not currently supported by ProductCart.

Greg, Yes one of our drop shippers has a warehouse in CA and they are now charging us for sales tax. I guess the state is imposing this on them :(
