Hi,

I want to set up a copy of my store on my local computer as test environment.

I called my hosting company and they sent me a zipped copy of my store and I
unzipped the file on my XP pro computer, installed iis and then pointed firefox to home.asp
(If I upgrade to Win 7 will the steps be the same?)

I got a lot of garbage in the screen.

I have never done this before and if it is against the rules I will stop, but it
seems that I read some place it is okay.

But... I do not know what I need to do totally to get a copy of my store running
on my local machine.

I know that I will need to connect to the data base and activate the store.
What I am trying to do is link Product cart to a copy of access.
(my hosting site uses ms sql)

If I do a clean install product cart walks me through the steps, but I trying to
do this with a already configured store.

If anyone has done this before I would greatly appreciate some advice on
what I need to do to be successful at getting a copy of my store running on my
local computer.

Thanks,
Dave

Dave,

You are allowed to have a development store to make customizations.

Here is a link to directions in the wiki.

Couple of things:

Windows XP is easier than Vista or Windows 7 but both will work. Also using access is easier than setting up SQL.

I hope this helps.

Okay guys,

I more or less figured out how to get a test store running on my
local computer but, I have  a few questions about IIS.

I am concerned about security issues.

What do I need to do to lock down iis.
Is it best to disconnect my computer from the internet, then install iis, then do my development work, then remove iis, then reconnect the internet to my computer?

That just seems like way too much work!
Is there a better way?

Could someone that knows about these things please point me in the correct direction?

Dave

Hi,
I presume you have a firewall in place? If not - get one, and don't rely on the windows firewall :-)
With a firewall up and running your PC should not respond to any port if the connection is initiated from the web.

Hi,
Do I need to configure the firewall or is is good as it is?

I have Norton internet security on my win xp machine.
Does having a firewall, which I do, mean that I can install and leave iis on my machine?

Hi Dave,
That's what I have done.
Much as I don't like the impact of Norton on a PC, IMHO it's a real resouce hog, it is OK as a firewall. You shouldn't need to change it's configuration unless at some point you want to allow external access.

Okay, I have a few more questions.

I set up the permissions but I am still having problems.
I am guessing that I need to set permissions starting from the directory below the
wwwroot directory. But in what Group/ (users names) do I need to make them in?

I also have database questions.
I had my hosting company zip up my website and Emailed it to me.
The site that is hosted is using MSSQL and my local XP Pro machine has Access on it.
I do not know what to do about the database.  will Product Cart make one for me or
do I need to make one myself?  If I do, How?

Dave
