Postal Code spaces

   The UK, Canada and Netherlands amongst others have spaces in the zip / postcode. I've noticed on my test customer record that the space has been stripped out. This is the actual data, not just display.
Is this default behaviour and for what purpose?
Does it bother anyone?
Will it cause any problems if the space removal is suppressed?
