gift registry cart question

   I installed the product cart about a year ago...and have slept since then.  They are having issues with checkout for a gift registry.  In looking at it, if I put something in the cart from the gift registry, then "remove" it, I can't put anything else in the cart.  I get the message "The shopping cart is currently in use for buying products listed in a Gift Registry.", when in reality the cart is empty.  Can I turn that option off?  Can't a shopper shop for personal stuff as well as a wedding gift?
