Ok here is a burning issue, that may effect all of us.  So far we only had to collect sales tax in the state we are present.  New York and other states now have inflicted sales tax on those selling goods to their states.  One way those state found a way into this is by looking at affiliates links from someone in their states.  They are basically saying that you now have a representative in their state and therefore must collect on all orders going to their state.  Amazon and Overstock were the first to hit hard by these laws.  They were being sued by NY and lost.  Overstock will no longer accept affiliates from New York, and Amazon agreed to start to collect sales tax.  Ebay is stilll fighting it.  Neither of them have a presense in New York.  New York seems to be the one pushing this issue the hardest, but other states like CA etc have implemented similar agendas.  I'm not even sure how to figure out all those sales tax districts etc.  A flat rate would be easy.  It will take days to sort it all out.  We also would need a way of running sales report showing the taxes etc.  I'm not listing links here, just google it and read the reputable sources that will come up.

Ditto !

Hi Katharina,
Off the top of my head I think a "tax file" is the way to go. Check the documentation on the WIKI regarding this. Not sure about the reports, but if it isn't already there I suspect it would probably be easy to create the custom code to support this, or even easier, export all the sales data and then use a spreadsheet to extract all the info.

This will effect every online store in the USA, so custom coding may not be the long term solution.  Having an affiliate will be treated like having a representative or presence in other states.  Meaning you have to collect taxes on other states.  The nightmare will be learning all the various tax rules and rates, which can change from city to city within a state.   There seems to be no central place to look this up, or does anyone know of a URL?   The reports will be important because sales tax has to be submitted to each state, and it will be dedious to add them all up manually.  We are in a sales tax free state, so I cannot just log in and play around.  At this point all we can do is prevent affiliate sign ups from certain states so we don't fall into this sales tax trap.  What I'm interested to know is how PC will handle this?  Can it be set up to prevent signups from certain states with a nice message explaning why.    Just like overstock.com does.

Currently ProductCart builds the Country and State/Province drop-downs based on routines that are shared across the entire application. So this would not be possible "out of the box". It would require some custom programming.

For the short term, you could leave the "State" drop-down as is, add some text to the page, set the system not to automatically approve affiliates and review each application.
