Multiple Products from One (Set Products)

Hi,

I have a question on making "set" products.
I want to sell items that are sold and listed as a 
set.  When I list the set as a product 
in the store it will ask for a on hand count of that item
which is fine but, I have a box of parts and depending on what
"set" someone orders  dictates how I will utilize the parts in the box
to make the set that was ordered.

Is there a way to have the on hand inventory tied to the amount, and
different types, of parts I have in the box and not on what set I sell?

I think this is kind of the BTO area but I will be acting as the customer
pre-deciding what sets will be available for the customer to order.

Any advice would be appreciated.
