Just updated my store with several security patches (yeah, I know, I'm a bit behind) and went to test things out. The onepagecheckout seems to be broken. I try to log in, and it just boots me back to the checkout screen -- no error message. Is there any way I can fix this short of re-installing the software from scratch?

This will be much easier to resolve if we know the browser you are using, and what version you have upgraded to.
On the surface, the behavior you describe is what happened back when IE9 came out and it was incompatible with the version of jQuery that was installed.
If your store is not customized, I would start by re-uploading the jQuery files in the includes folder. Follow that by the 4 files in the PC folder that have "OnePageCheckout" in the file name.
If that still doesn't work, since you qualified for downloading the upgrade, I'll assume you have a support plan in place. I'd submit a support request at that point.
