I'm trying to use the MailChimp API, so that when a customer checks the newsletter box on  site... the subscriptions go to MailChimp list.  Would this be hard to do:

This is available "out of the box" if you use MailUp. We worked with our friends at NWEB to develop a series of Web services that would allow for the kind of tight integration that is needed (see MailUp integration with ProductCart).

This means, for example, that:

- When a customer registers a new account or changes his/her newsletter subscription preferences, the same preferences are synchronized in your MailUp console. And this applies to multiple newsletters at once (multiple "lists": e.g. "New Products", "Promotions", "Tips & Tricks", etc.)
- If real-time synchronization does not work, for any reason, the information is stored in the ProductCart system so that it can be later synchronized
- If a newsletter recipient unsubscribes from the message he/she receives, this is immediately reflected in his/her account in the ProductCart-powered store (i.e. newsletter preferences are kept updated in a bi-directional way)
- You can create filtered groups of customers in ProductCart, then instantly send them to MailUp as a subgroup of an existing list of subscribers, so that you can quickly execute a targeted email campaign to that group of customers
- You can import customers into ProductCart, then synchronize their newsletter preferences with MailUp, with or without sending a request for subscription confirmation while doing so.

If you decide to use another e-mail marketing service, like MailChimp, you could look at the code we developed for the MailUp integration and use it as a reference, assuming that their API allows for all of the features that are available in the MailUp integration. You can find it on the ProductCart WIKI.

Disclaimer: If you decide to customize ProductCart, always remember that we do not provide any technical support on customizations made to the system, so we will not be able to assist you in the integration effort and will no longer support the portions of the application that have been edited. The files that you will be editing (e.g. pc/login.asp) are crucial files in the application, so be extra careful and always make back-ups of the original files.
