How can I get ProductCart to have products which are sold by the square metre, or to accept a decimal in quantity? example: Quantity = 1.31

For example it could be for flooring, Turf, Fabric, Fly Screens and much more, a
very powerful feature.

If I could get the Product to accept a decimal in the quantity, and enter the square metre rate in the price, it would effectively work.

I could then add script to the page for a width by height calculation to provide the customer with the quantity to enter in.

Ultimately it would automatically update the price from the calculation script. I Don't know how involved this would be?

Any Ideas

I was approached by a prospective client who had a similar requirement.  He presented this site as an example of what he was seeking to accomplish, and it may also work for you.  http://tinyurl.com/cu8ltg

Obviously this is not a PC store but it might give you some ideas as to what a custom development might look like.

Yes that right Greg,

That site is simply allowing the quantity to accept a decimal. And by pasting some script into the built in html editor we can get ProductCart to do the calculation by width and length or height.

?What files and Database fields would need to be modified to allow the Storefront and Control Panel pages to accept and show a decimal.

If I enter a decimal in the quantity I get the following error,
"Please enter a positive integer in this field."

?Where in what file sets this constraint and do database field properties need to changed?

I Would need to only make this available to specific categories. Where all products use decimal.

If you where adding it as a new feature to ProductCart you would make it optional per product. And select how many characters are shown to the right of the decimal.

? Is it possible with the current database structure to have a custom price updated into the Order product Price?

The answers to your questions are a bit beyond what I can do here.  To research and evaluate those very questions would be a significant part of a consulting project, which we could talk about offline, but your question reminded me of that link and I did want to share it with you.

I would stray away from this fractional stuff, or from customers figuring out square meters.  My suggestion is to list the product by width and let the customer buy the lengths in cm or inches.  I hope this will work for you.  That way the customer does not need to calculate, but rather measure the area and figure it from there.

Sorry cannot list items by width as they will range from 500mm wide to 3000mm and 1000mm high to 3000mm high on average.

This product is custom made to size.

The product needs to be listed by type of material and charged per square metre. Much like selling Carpet, you need to list the material for the customer to choose from in the category listing.

I have a standard size on my site (800mm wide x 2100mm high) with options to increase width by +70mm + 140mm + 210mm etc. But to do this for each length and material is out of the question.

This square rate charge feature, is the key. And is a common pricing method used in many industries.

Is there any reason why you could not price the items in mm or cm removing the need for decimal places?

You could still show the price per metre in the decription but allow productcart to calculate the price in mm.

Update:

The asp square rate calculator is now working to my satisfaction.

Check it out here,
http://www.austcoldindustries.com.au/calculator.asp

? How can we pass a custom price through ProductCart ?

Or any suggestions on how to get Productcart to reflect the custom price and still be able to select the  QTY like normal in ProductCart. I am trying to avoid blowing out the "QTY" to achieve this custom price as this can be used for custom made products that you purchase a QTY of.

This is a powerful feature and asset to ProductCart, Please Help.
