I am using version 2.76p of Product Cart and our business is very small.
However, I have thought about upgrading to the latest version, but not being an expert on these things I am nervous about doing it. Someone else originally set up my existing product cart and while I have learned quite a bit, I lack a little comfidence to go for the upgrade.
I find it confusing that the databse resides on another part of my web space to that of my web files for example.
Can anyone offer any guidance, experiences etc. I would be grateful
Barry

Unless you have customized features in your store, the upgrade process is really very simple. It doesn't really matter where the database is as long as the connection string is accurate because there is a wizard that performs any necessary upgrades. Mostly, the upgrade is just a matter of downloading zip files, unzipping them, and following directions to correctly copy files up to your site.

Darn Greg, you've got ahead of me. I was a little bit nervous too, because everyone said it was such a big step. Turnout out to be a breeze. You have to do several upgrades to get to the current version, so be prepared. You may want to fine tune the search and navigation part, but that was it as far as it goes for template changes. EI has a file on their site with step by step instructions. It was really simple, even for someone like me who is not a programmer. (I only have basic html and internet knowledge.) The rest is just uploading files. You will love the new version. The back office may be a little bit confusing first, due the volume of new things. Also make sure to double check all your settings, like shipping options etc, after the upgrade. I've found one or two that were changed, but can't remember which ones. Nothing major and it will not stop your store from running. Overall I would say it was just like any other little upgrade in between. If you have done just one of them, you know it isn't that hard. Just follow EI's instructions step by step and you will be fine. BTW most databases are on different servers then the rest of the files. The upgrade will not mess with that, so don't worry. My suggestions is to do the upgrade like on a Wednesday when shopping is usually slow, that way you can contact EI if there is an issue.

The only customised feature we have is a file we had to change in relation to emails. It would not allow us to send bulk emails through our dedicated server. It was a sendmail CDOSYS file.
The only other change we made was to add our VAT number to our invoices, but through this forum I was helped how to remove that only a few days ago.
So, I suspect that our 2.76p version of Product Cart would be classed as unmodified.
I thought I could upgrade directly from 2.76p to v3

You go from 2.76p over 3.03, 3.04, 3.051, to 3.11. So this will keep you busy for a little bit. I did it over 3 days. The longest work is downloading the complete store each time before you update to the next version to have a valid copy, just in case. I have satellite Internet and it takes a while to download, because my provider does not give that much bandwidth for downloads. You may copy it onto your sever to make it faster. The rest of the updates is less then 30 minutes. Only the one from 2.76p to 3.03 needs a little bit longer due to customizations.

The upgrade from 2.76 will take you to an early version of V3. That will be followed by a series of additional minor version upgrages, none of which are difficult, all of which will be very familliar if you are accustomed to performing your V2 upgrades. It's going to go in steps until you are all the way to 3.11 or 3.12. If you get to the point that the "check for updates" reports version 3.11, be sure to go to the support page and download all the post-3.11 updates and install them.
