We sell items (for example Hex Dumbbells) that are all the same, except for the size. Each size is a different weight. Can I set the different options to be different weights? I don't want to add each size dumbbell as an individual item, as one picture and description can suffice. Shipping costs vary greatly between a 2 lb dumbbell and a 100 lb dumbbell. Barring assigning separate weights for different options, can I change the shipping costs of products/options individually? Thanks.

This was posted earlier this week.  Does that help?

That's a bit different, that's custom shipping prices per SKU, I'm looking for custom weight or shipping for each option on the same item.

Hi,
Off the top of my head using BTO will do the job.
Each individual dumbell could be sub-products of a product "dumbbells" - so they could share an image & description. But each individual dumbbell would have it's own price, weight,SKU which would match your needs.

It would also allow you to have tick or number boxes next to each individual dumbell so that the customer could pick any combination they needed on a single page.

You can easily do this using the apparel add-on. When you manage the "sub products" you can specify weight (pounds and ounces) for each one. You can test it out on the Product Cart Demo with Apparel Add-On.

Hi,
    Sdalan is, I'm sure, correct.
If it doesn't match exactly what you need then you could take a look at : http://www.greybearddesign.com/productcart/color-size-matrix/ - http://www.greybearddesign.com/productcart/color-size-matrix /
- Which was developed by Greg, a V experianced PC developer and active forum member. His add-on means you can keep the matrix view very neat & I think it would match your needs very well.

Interesting idea Hamish, and thanks for the kind words.  Not quite sure if the matrix will work for this however.

The key to the matrix is that you would have (for example) color and size attributes as shown in this example.
http://www.buygolfshirts.net/store/pc/PCMXviewPrd.asp?idcategory=&idproduct=170370 - http://www.buygolfshirts.net/store/pc/PCMXviewPrd.asp?idcate gory=&idproduct=170370

Could be differently named attributes, but there still needs to be two dimensions to the grid.  And thinking about this merchant's products, I'm not so sure there are two dimensions.  Just different size weight plates or dumbells as the OP suggested.

http://www.mainefitness.net/shop/productcart/pc/viewCategories.asp?idCategory=30 - http://www.mainefitness.net/shop/productcart/pc/viewCategori es.asp?idCategory=30

I'd need to know more before proposing my mod as a solution, as much as I would like to see it in further use.  But the matrix is not intended to be used in an instance where only one dimension works.

sdalan is correct, however, in stating that the Apparel mod supports individual shipping weights per subproduct.  Great catch sdalan.

mainefitness, am I correct in my belief that these products would only have a single product option, as opposed to a 2-dimensional set of options like color/size on clothing?

A revision of the matrix to support a single dimemsion is possible, and would potentially be a great interface for merchants selling products where the shopper would want to select multiple sizes of that same item, such as these weight products.  It's just a matter of budget in that case, and whether it's worth it to the merchant to upgrade to the Apparel mod, my mod, plus revisions.

Hi Greg,
The apparel add-on is certainly a more economic approach and should suit this site well.

It was "purchase quantities for multiple color/size combinations in a single step" that grabbed my attention about your mod.
I suspect people buying dumbells often want to buy a variety & gyms would want more than 1 of any particular weight.
Wouldn't it work for an n * 1 array?  - I know that's a bit of a "cheat" where the second dimension of the array would just be something like "Hex Dumbell" or "Grey".

Done the way you propose the second dimension attribute takes on a name, and that name gets passed to the viewcart.asp product description and beyond.

Say you name the 1st option "weight" and the 2nd option "qty".  And to be specific here, we are only adding that 2nd option to accomodate the needs of a grid.  It needs, as we are discussing, 2 dimensions even if that results in a single column of quantity input form fields.

So in this example http://tinyurl.com/4z2w6z - http://tinyurl.com/4z2w6z we have sizes (weights) down the left, and the qty input boxes adjacent to it.  That's great until we get to the viewcart.asp page and we get "Solid Hex Dumbbells (1lb - Qty)" in the product description.  The reference to "Qty" looks awful, and will be carried forward throughout the system:  order confirmation, checkout, order history, invoice, and so on...

I'm open to suggestions. Further ideas on how to overcome that obstacle?

We've fixed it! Ok, we took the lazy way out, and charge shipping separately, and calculate it special for each order. At 1-2 orders per month currently, it works for now.
