Hello,

I implemented this error404 technique a few months ago and is working nicely, just in time for the boating season.  My rank dropped as the new pages were indexed, but now all is looking good.  I do still see some risidual .asp pages, but for the most part the .htm pages are the ones getting picked up now.  I use a regular site map and Google Sitemaps too... anything to let those links get crawled.

One thing that needs to be fixed or modified is the when you drill to the sub category page, then down to the product page you lose the bread crumb navigation trail at the top.  This forces people to either click the back button OR start drilling down from the top level again.  It would be nice to maintain that navigation all the way through the category pages and product detail pages.

All in all I think the custom404 mod is working great for me.  I type in the product names and boom... I'm first page ranked (granted Straight Dock Ladders or 3 Step Straight Dock Ladder is less competitive than the keyword Dock Ladders).  I would have to say that Google is ok with this technique or I would have been dropped a while ago.  It would also be nice to render those pages with the product name in the URL versus a number .htm (dock_ladders.htm versus 135.htm).

Last thing.  Kind of off this subject and maybe more appropriate for a different forum category.  When I click "Continue Shopping" after placing an item in the cart it always takes me to the home page.... not the page I just came from - which is the way it should be and is with any other shopping software out there.  Does this happen for everyone using PC?  Shouldn't that continue shopping button take me back to the page I came from versus the home page?  Anyway, hoping someone might answer that real quick, or fill me in on what I might be doing wrong (bad setting in admin etc).

That's it... can't wait for V3 to get released!!!!!  Love PC!!  Keeps getting pushed back though.  Get it out there guys!!!

Thanks,

JG

Thank you for your feedback.

We will keep your suggestion on the "Continue Shopping" button in mind for a future version.

Dockgear, I must admit that never occurred to me. I went ahead and changed mine.

An easy fix for the 'continue shopping' button from the view cart screen would be as follows...

In the file 'viewcart.asp' find the following line... (It's around line 146, of course my cart is quite modified so it may not be the exact line number).

<a href="default.asp"><img src="<%=RSlayout("continueshop")%>" border="0"></a>

replace

<a href="default.asp">

with the following...

<a href='javascript:history.go(-1)'>

Note: Don't replace the whole line just the beginning with the 'a href' or the button won't show.

When the continue shopping button is clicked in viewcart, you will be taken to the page you came from.

Hope this helps...

Ted
