Hi,

I am currently getting complaints from customers that they request to have their password emailed to them and they never receive the email.  This is happening a lot.

Any help with this?  Is anyone having this problem?

John

Have you (1) tested that e-mails are being sent in general by using the testing tool on the e-mail settings section of the admin and (2) tested this function you are asking about?

Once you are convinced that mail in general and that the "lost password" feature is working in your store, the next thing to look for is if those messages are going to people's junk mail boxes.

We also have customers that call and tell us that they are not getting it.  I've tested it by creating an account and it works every time for me.  That got me to the following conclusion that a) perhaps they don't really know their correct email address, b) that this may be an occasional fluke, and c) that perhaps their host is marking/deleting it as spam or blocking it in some way.  So I usually reset their password and that is the end of it.  I may get a call or email once per month.   I sometimes advise my customers, when they are really nice on the phone, that they should consider to get a free yahoo account.  That way they can only use it for orders and get a new one when to much spam comes around.

Script generated email often is weighted as spam by receiving mail servers, as it is typically just relayed.

One way to mitigate against this is to set your store to use CDOSYS for sending out email and set it to authenticate against the SMTP server. This way the mail is actually being sent from an SMTP server rather than just being relayed.

I think you're right that some customers simply do not know their email address, or are mis-spelling it. This causes loads of bounced emails if they place an order! To try to overcome the problem I have modified the sign up page so that the email address has to be typed in twice, and this has reduced the problem slightly.

I see this on a lot of sites and think there is a good reason for it.  I hope EI picks up on it an adds it to future releases.  This would also be helpful on the contact form.  We get questions, type up a whole lot of information, and then their email just bounces as non existing.  That usually bumbs me out, especially when you type a lot for nothing.
