Hi

We are currently with 123reg for our dedicated server but we would like to move to Fasthosts

Our problem is the SQL Database, we dont want to lose the customer details and past orders.  Is there an easy way to transfer the SQL database.  I have tried making a backup to my local drive then uploading the backup to a new database but this just fails

Any ideas would be welcomed

Neil

I have just sent a private forum message to you regarding your desire to re-locate your Database.

Moving a MSSQL database is not particularly difficult but you may not have sufficient permissions to undertake it without cooperation of your current and new hosts.

Some details are here: http://wiki.earlyimpact.com/how_to/move_store?s%5b%5d=moving - http://wiki.earlyimpact.com/how_to/move_store?s[]=moving

You need to preferably do this at a time when the store is typically quiet, if you know of such a time.  If you can closely coordinate this with everyone, that is best.

First, set the store to "closed" so that orders don't arrive at the old host during the transition.

Ask the old host to pull a backup of the database and provide it to you.  They will probably place it in a folder on your web site.  Download that via FTP and upload it to the new server.  Then tell the new host where to locate that backup so they may perform the procedure required to import (restore) the database to the new SQL server.  Ask that this be done as soon as practical since the store on the old host is closed.

Once this is done, transfer DNS.  Also, assuming the new host provides a means by which you may address your site prior to DNS transfer, test the store and reverse the flag indicating the store is closed on the new host.  This way when DNS does transfer, and customers find their way there, your store is open for business.
