it would be nice to be able to individually select bto items to display their description... right now, you have to select the entire category - but a lot of times we only want to display a notice on one of the options... so we don't want every option to show the description.
For instance... if we have a list of 5 processors... well, on the fastest one we might want to put in the description: World's Fastest Mobile Processor! - we can put that in the desciption of the bto item, however, since we have to select the whole category to show - all the CPU descriptions will show up on the configuration page... we'd like to have just the one CPU description show up.

Hi JWL, Just use the BTO category description? I expect the overhead for many stores that have large numbers of BTO Products in choosing individual BTO Item description to display or not, could be quite a burden.

category description is used for something else look at this page:
http://www.alienware.com/customize/area-51-m15x-notebook.aspx?Syscode=PC-LT-AREA51M15X-AI1&SubCode=SKU-DEFAULT
notice how on some options they have a little note like: The world’s most powerful mobile processor! or The Creative Pro’s choice for advanced content creation or Requires Vista 64-bit
the bto description can be used for these notes, but when you enable that you have to do it for the whole category so every bto item will show either a blank gap or a description, but as shown on the page above - you can't just show the description for one bto item in a category.

There should not be a blank gap if there is no description for that BTO item. Can you post a link so we can take a look at your page and see what is happening?
