We have just been looking at the way PC dynamically gererates meta tags -- title, description and keywords meta tags -- and seeing much room for improvement on how this is all handled "on the fly" when these tags are not expicitely defined.
It's always best to have one's finger on the pulse of how to manually optimize this sort of content, but many merchants have catalogs that are so large this just isn't viable, or may just take a very long time to work through (so it's good to have the system handling things meanwhile).
Dynamically generating these three meta tags is a huge convenience in these scenarios.
We are just about to release a modification to dramatically enhance how these meta tags are dynamically generated on the fly when there is nothing entered to override them.
We would like to hear your feedback, though, on what features you would like to have the options to control.
We are currently adding the following features:
- Ability to define the default Title, Description and Keywords meta tags (when there are not other values available) via a Control Panel admin (where PC by default has these hard coded as constants on the /pc/include-metatags.asp file)
- Option to incluce one's Company/Store name in default meta tags
- Option to include the parent category name for a product in default meta tags
- Option to include the SKU for a product in default meta tags
- Option to include Brand for a product in default meta tags
- Option to include default keyword string into default meta tags
- Option to include the parent categy name in default meta tags on subcategory pages
Our aim is to give merchants tighter control over handling how these meta tags are dynamically generated based on our decade of experience with SEO and ecommerce. However, we are inviting commentary on how you think these things could be handled best based on our experience with your own store(s).
