I've been using NotePad++ for a couple of years now and absolutely love it. Recently though, I've discovered a plugin that is included with it that has made it worth even more to me. There's a Compare plugin that allows you to compare 2 or more files so you can make any changes necessary on the newer file. This has come in REALLY handy with new ProductCart updates.

I had tried one of the compare tools that PC documentation recommended, but it just seemed to mess up the files. NotePad++ is a free source code editor that rivals many retail editors. I highly recommend it for your next PC update, if you're not already using it.

Another good tool is Beyond Compare from http://www.scootersoftware.com/ - http://www.scootersoftware.com/

I've used exam diff (free version) and exam diff pro ($35) - they work great!

ExamDiff is actually one that I tried before. It messed up my files for some reason. There were some things that were qwirky about it. Maybe they've fixed it since then, but I would recommend NotePad++ over it. Plus, NotePad++ is a "multi-tasker." ExamDiff only serves that one purpose - that I'm aware of. Just my humble opinion.

Question:  Does Notepad++ do the path regeneration that Dreamweaver does, as mentioned in the "Moving Home Page to Root" instructions??

Hi David,

I don't believe so - I'm fairly certain it's just a straight text editor without such features.  When performing the home page to root move, it's best to just locate each of the include tags,  .asp page references and so on - and to edit them manually.

I'm a big fan of WinMerge for code compare ( http://winmerge.org/ - http://winmerge.org/ ).

One of the handiest features is comparing entire directories or even whole web sites -- very handy for doing upgrades.
