Hi
Looking for a bit of advise.

We are moving from a shared hosting environment to a VPS server, but MS SQL isn't the full version. Its the cutdown SQL Express Server.

Will this work? + Any advise running PC on this instead of the normal MSSQL2005.

I've looked everywhere inside EI for info but cant find anything that refers to a production environment rather than a testing environment.

Thanks

Rob

Hello RobertZ,

Your question is a bit open-ended but I will give you a definitive answer ...

Can you use MSSQL Express with ProductCart?  Yes you can

Should you use MSSQL Express with ProductCart?  Absolutely and unequivocally NO!!!

MSSQL Express is a scaled down version of MSSQL Server but do not think that is the same as having the WorkGroup or Standard edition as it is not.  There are many things missing form the Express version the least of which being maintenance plans to keep your DB running smooth.  The Express version is meant for nothing more than a Development database or a personal database at best.

I have been working on the ProductCart Database for many years and I have seen people try to use this DB and some even claim that it is working fine for them (misguided as they may be).   If you are serious about your online business do not take shortcuts (you will thank me later for that advise).

If you are going into a VPS chances are that you may still have access your your hosting provider's shared services.  I would definitely ask them about this and see if you can still use their shared MSSQL 2005 server (and also get the benefit of having a management team that is taking care of that server to keep things running smooth).

See if your provider offers sql2k8 web edition. It is only ~$20 month and does not suffer from the connection limitations or db size limitations of express.

I do not recommend using SQL2008 for ProductCart at this time.  Do not get me wrong I have seen it work but there are some compatibility issues between the architecture of the ProductCart DB and the architecture of SQL2008.

Here is s detailed thread I posted a few months ago that talks to this point.

We have multiple VPSes running sql2k8 web edition without issues. However we do set up any productcart db to use sql2k5 compatablity. That should have been mentioned.

Thanks for the quick replies.

Advice taken. Found a host with VPS and a MSSQL DB, which is not included Express Server.

Thanks again.
