Hi,

I've posted about this before but I don't think it was ever addressed.

This is a problem that affects me every day on my website. It seems like it would be so easy to fix. Here's the issue:

When I make a coupon code for free shipping I can set what products the coupon works for. However someone can add one hundred other products to their shopping cart and add just one product that the free shipping coupon works for and their WHOLE order will receive free shipping. I as a user cannot block Product Cart from giving away free shipping to any product people care to place in their cart.

What ends up happening is that I am having to make phone calls every day to people and explain to them that products they put in their cart don't qualify. You can imagine how those phone calls go. Calls I shouldn't have to be making in the first place.

Please respond back on this issue. I need assurance this will can be changed.

Also, I talked with a programmer who is very familiar with Product Cart and was told that the code to adjust this is in an encrypted file that he cannot alter. So this needs to happen with Early Impact themselves.

Perhaps this works for you.  It's not a perfect solution, but it avoids free shipping on items that do not ship for free.  Set the product weight with free shipping to 0.  That way only the minimum shipping will apply.  You can then refund the shipping, on orders that truly qualify if needed.  I found out that customers in general appreciate a refund.  We for example increased our international shipping by 6 dollars to offset the packaging material needed.  Sometimes we do need to refund the extra postage they paid, and sometimes we don't.  Looks better then sending out a message telling them they owe us more.  We may loose a customer or two with the hiked shipping rate, but quite honest international shipping is a lot more work.

Just saw that you can specify weight under coupons.   That will fix the tiny flaw you will encounter with my previous post.  Set the free shipping to orders that have 0 weight only.  Voila, all working the way you envisioned.

This doesn't work for me because I don't want to set the weight of products to zero. They must order a certain dollar amount to get free shipping. Your change would affect people who ordered less then the required amount as well.

I've checked on my backend under coupons.  It seems that you can set 2 conditions.  Weight and min order amount.  I know the solution is not perfect, so you need to wage what works better for you.   The current issue or not showing the weight correctly.  I'm a user as well, and try to work around issues whenever possible.  EI cannot write a cart that works for everyone.  They have to find the middle way to satisfy most, this means that users sometimes have to live with certain problems.  This applies to all shopping carts out there.

Oh I understand. You can't please everyone. But this is simply an issue that needs to be addressed.

Don't complain at me, that it does not solve your problem.  You should be thankful that someone is at least trying to offer a solution.  All you do is complain.  Perhaps you need to pay someone for your site problems.

That's what you get for taking the time to help.  At least others are nicer.  And there are many helpful people on this board that will take the time, if you are nice enough.  Lesson learned.

v4 will be released soon and you can exclude products.  You can try in on our demo store.

Wow Katharine... I'm really kind of shocked that you would be so thin-skinned.

I really wasn't "complaining" at you at all. The only reason I'm stopping by again now is to kind of defend my good name. You won't see me post in this thread again as an Early Impact moderator answered my concerns. But I can tell you that you really shouldn't take people telling you your suggestions don't work for them so personally.

Have a good one.

Matt,

I just tried it in the demo store and it's currently not working as you suggested. I did a free shipping coupon code for only Clothing. I then excluded all other categories. Then I added whatever products I wanted to my shopping cart and I got free shipping every time. It didn't matter if I added products to the cart from the exclusion list, as long as a Clothing item was in the cart I got free shipping for everything.

Try it yourself, hopefully my free shipping coupon is still in there.

Hi Shane, that is correct. That is the way the system works. These are applicability filters. That is: the coupon is applicable as long as the criteria are met. What Matt was saying is that in v4 you can set those criteria both by inclusion and by exclusion (e.g. coupon is applicable only if product XYZ is being purchased OR coupon is applicable only if product XYZ is NOT being purchased).

We certainly agree that the feature could be expanded to support the functionality you mentioned in your posts. However, we would like to point out that these are not simple changes to the system. For example, in the case of a free shipping coupon (which you referred to above), ProductCart will have to go back and reformulate shipping calculations based on the fact that one or more products are now being excluded from the calculation. This affects a number of things, not just the total order weight. For example, a shipment that ProductCart had estimated being handled with 2 packages (based on the maximum weight per package setting), might now only be shipped in one package.

Anyhow, this is not a simple addition to the checkout source code. Still, it is being considered for a future release.

You may want to set the "Parameters that Restrict Applicability" price to the exact amount of the free shipped product and then when another item is added it breaks the parameter of the discount code and then adds shipping.
There may be additional problems such as EI mentioned where boxs and weights affect the final shipping price.
Best of luck.

Thanks, Katharina. Just had a client run into this -- trying to make some products have free shipping using the coupon method at the product level, and ran into the issue here with that making the whole order default to free shipping. Works perfectly by instead not assigning weight to those product and then just setting the coupon to apply only to products with no weight as you suggest here :-)

I'm glad it worked for somebody.   Thanks for mentioning it.
