I was working with a client yesterday who needed to regenerate category navigation.
They have close to 100 categories, and as we all know, robots will only crawl up to about 100 links per page visit.
Their designer had simply commented out the icon to expand the category tree -- so all of the sub-navigation links were still there in the source that a robot would see.
For this particular site, it would be more appropriate to generate category navigation based solely on the top level/parent categories.
We added this option for them, but I think this should be a default option. There is currently no way to use the CP to just generate the top level categories.

Hi Sean,
If we understand correctly what you were looking for, that feature already exists. It's option #2 (Include only top-level categories and their products). In most cases there are no products in the top-level categories, so it returns the result that you were looking for, we believe.

"in most cases", yes, but not all cases.
The option to just generate top level/parent categories is the most simple way to generate the category navigation and for folks who have a lot of categories -- while still wanting to assign sub-cagts or products to these top level categories, having the option to just generate top level categories is an asset.
Simple to do. I can't see any reason not to include this in 4.1.
