ProductCart now has sort by high price, low price, sku and description. I think it would be useful for a customer to sort by popularity or best selling.

Yes, this is on our radar. The reason why it's not there yet is that we don't want to calculate the "popularity" on the fly, for obvious performance reasons, and, on the other side, ProductCart does not currently store a history of sales for specific time frames.

The issue is the following: "popularity" typically means "sales", but it clearly does not make sense to show as #1 a product that sold like crazy 2 years ago and that is now close to being discontinued.

That is: "popularity" really means "recent sales", in most cases.

So, what we are thinking is that:
  1. The merchant should indicate what "popular" means (e.g. best selling over the last N months, where N is a variable that they can enter)
  2. ProductCart will regularly calculate those figures (e.g. on a weekly basis or so)
  3. The storefront will allow to "Sort by Popularity" based on that sales information
Do you agree with this approach?

As a point of interest, we recently altered a store so that the merchant can dictate the period of time for which best sellers may be calculated, and we use that to drive the "best sellers" feature on the home page and showBestSellers.asp.

To keep the sales data up to date, we built a stored procedure + a scheduled task that runs that procedure.  It runs daily.

Thanks Greg. Yes, that's exactly the idea.
