Has anyone written the code to populate the eCommerce portion of the google analytics code?  Would really be amazing to track results to that level, but we don't have the in-house resources to populate all of the fields.

For those of you who don't know, with google analytics, you can add a piece of code to ordercomplete.asp that records which products, categories, prices, etc are being purchased, and then you can use that data to tie back to the actual visit that produced the transaction.  very cool stuff!

This certainly sounds interesting. We are not aware of anyone that has done work in this area. It would be great to see something, if any ProductCart user has looked into this.

Here at Early Impact we were just going to look into this new service (and possible integration with ProductCart), but Google has temporarily turned off new sign-ups for Google Analytics.

Apparently they were overwhelmed by demand and the hardware couldn't handle it (they bought out Urchin to offer this service, as you probably know, so they probably need to scale up the old hardware). So we need to wait until they accept new applications.

I thought I would give more of a breakdown of what's required for GA.  There two parts to setting it up:

The first part is placing a code in the <HEAD> section of every page that you want to track.

The second, optional, piece of code would go in ordercomplete.asp and has to be filled in with variables like order number, customer number, order total, product SKU, product name, product category, etc etc.

It's this second section that would require some additional coding.  The first line is general information (like order number and total), but the following lines are all dynamic...one line per product.

It's interesting stuff, and so far the results we have received from just the <HEAD> code have been very interesting!

Full integration with Google Analytics is now available for ProductCart users. We not only support e-commerce transactions (Google Analytics is automatically notified when an order is placed), but also created an interface for store managers to post adjustments (negative transactions) when an order is returned (full or partial return) and/or when it cancelled.

For details and to download the files/documentation, please see:

We set this up on Saturday and it's fantastic.  The reports at Google are very illuminating indeed.   We also set up AdWords in Google, so we can refine them on the basis of the reports.

Excellent work!

cheers

It looks like orders placed through paypal are not tracked so the number of orders placed are off for us... unless we use paypal pro i believe.

All orthers that reach "orderComplete.asp" will be tracked by Google Analytics. There must have been a problem with one or more of those orders (e.g. they remained "incomplete"?)
