Subject: Need help improving attribute images
Date Posted: 15-February-2007 at 8:58pm

I've tried using the attribute images for pics rather than swatches and the automatic thumbnails are very lo quality.

Is there a way to improve them? I've tried both jpgs and gifs with the same result, they are automatically generated and are both the same lo res. I also tried editing the thumbnail per line to only 2 but no improvement.

Any one have any thoughts?

Instead of letting product cart generate different size images from your main image, you could just create each size yourself using photoshop or paintshop pro or any other image editing software then uploading it onto the site. With photoshop you can choose to save images for web. If the site doesn't allow you to upload your own images, you can always upload them via FTP into your site and simply name them the exact name ProductCart uses, to replace the images they create with your own. Hope that helps and I hope that makes sense.

P.S. EI, Please correct me if I am ever wrong. Just trying to help. :)

Actually I have been using photoshop and to create the 3 different sized files (the upload and resize feature doesn't seem to work quite the way I'd like).

I would like to know if there's a way of specifying the jpg for the attribute image, or if it justs gets resized automatically.

Not sure...which version of PC do you have? I have the standard version 3.04 with no add-ons. I think you might have the apparel add-on. If you don't see a place to specify the images from the admin section, then you'll have to upload it directly into PC through FTP, using the same name PC uses for those images.
The best way to locate those images in their folders would be to right click the image from your store front and select the properties from the drop down. It'll then give you the "location" of the image. Then follow the folders using your ftp program until you locate all of those images. I'd make a copy of that folder in case something happens, you can always re-upload the old folder. You'll have to use the same extension PC uses (e.g. jpg or gif) for those images, otherwise they won't be linked properly. Another thing that would be good is to note the size of the image and the file size of the image to make sure your images are the same size and file size, so that PC can display them as easily as they display the current images you have.

Hope that helps some. I know I've changed a lot of "stock" images this way. It's just a matter of locating them in your PC folders.

Yes, in the apparel version, when you edit the subproducts, (i.e. the apparel settings for a product), there are two fields. One for the general image and one for the detail image. You can upload those directly to the PC catalog folder and then reference those images in those two fields. In that case PC should not resize the images at all. We recommend keeping your images for a product as close in size as possible if not the exact same size as the product page looks better that way.

actually I just realized that the thumbnails I meant are the 'additional product views'

is there a way that they don't get resized. i know the manual says their size is dependant on how many in a row and size of detail pic.

I'm not sure how the size of the thumbnails is created for the additional product images but you can still FTP or upload your regular images without using the resizing feature and then select those general and detail images when adding additional images. The thumbnails, although shrunk, should stay proportional and as long as all the images for a specific product are the same size, it should look ok below the main image.

Do you have a URL we can view for the product(s) you're having trouble with?

that tells me how the thumbnail is created and how to set its size. i assume its doing that from the general image.

what i would prefer is to create my own 50px thumbnail and use it instead of a poorly resized image.

is that possible ... I've used javascript image rollovers on other carts and can do it.

No, this does not tell you how the thumbnail is created. It simply tells you how the image width is set via CSS. The image is created by you or by the Image Upload & Resize tool. It's never distorted when it's created by the Impage Upload & Resize too. You can certainly create your own and FTP the image to the "pc/catalog" folder.

I am having the same issue. When the (Click to see larger image and other views) thumbnail is clicked, the popup showing all the additional product views with the rollovers is resizing the image and distorting it. It looks very bad. It is using the right image, it is just resizing (as opposed to resampling) the image. IE: The detail image is being used but the detail image is being resized to a smaller dimension to display it. The right click properties of the image are correct except for the dimension for the detail image. If I right click and download that image to my computer, then view it, it is just fine. This is a resizing issue that I, too, would like to "turn off".

In contrast, if you are on the same product page, hover over one of the additional product views so the rollover changes, then click on "Zoom" instead, then the properly sized detail additonal view image displays by itself.

I really like this functionality, but I really want the resize issue to be removed. I too am using photoshop and directly FTPing my images so they are exactly what I want. This is destroying the image when viewed via (Click to see larger image and other views) on the additional product views.

I apologize if this crossed the line into technical support, I was just jumping in on this thread. Thanks.

you explained the situation totally, it's like the resize doesn't do a resample.

The FAQ that EI posted explains this. There are no thumbnails generated for the additional images. Only the regular and large images. PC uses a class in the pcStoreFront.css file to force the image thumbnails to be resized to a maximum width of 50px by default. It is not a new image, just a non-proportionate resize by CSS. You can change the CSS and remove the width definition but then your images will be as large as the regular size image. Your best option is to make your regular images equal height and width so the look better when sized in CSS. If that is not an option you'll probably need to create something from scratch. There are routines that can resize an image proportionately but it would be some work to implement that on the product detail page.

Thanks netprofits, that does explain the thumbnail, but my bigger concern is not with the thumbnail. It is with the full size detail image that is called in the window with multiple thumbnails.

Again, this window is called up when you click on one of the additional product view images. You get a window with all additional product view thumbnails again, with a single detail image that rolls with the thumbnails hovered over. That detail image is the problem one. In my case, it is taking my 350 width detail image and resizing it without resampling down to 310 width. It is killing the image by doing this. Maybe 310 is a max setting and if I resize my image to that dim, I will come out OK. Or is it a % down scale that will occur no matter what size detail image I feed it?

this is a link in my store which causes the same issue/problem as mentioned above, http://www.bikerstuff.ca/store/pc/viewPrdPopWindow.asp?idProduct=917 - http://www.bikerstuff.ca/store/pc/viewPrdPopWindow.asp?idPro duct=917

however, when the zoom feature is used from http://www.bikerstuff.ca/store/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=10&idproduct=917 - http://www.bikerstuff.ca/store/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=10& amp;idproduct=917  the correct 350px picture is used.

In another store of mine this feature uses a routine by lightbox http://pranas.net/webgallerycreator/ - http://pranas.net/webgallerycreator/  which works without resizing http://bikerstickers.ca/Scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=41 - http://bikerstickers.ca/Scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=41  however I believe the rollover may be slower on the display but the zoom feature is much nicer.

Well I just figured out how to fix the large image resize.

change this code in the pc/viewprodpopupwindow.asp (line 247) to your large image size (I changed to 350px, it was at 300px)

/*---------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------
  ProductCart Product ViewPrd.asp Images
 ------------------------------------------------------ ----------------------------------*/
 #pcMain .pcShowMainImage img {
  width: 350px;
 }

That is correct. I'm not sure why that style is over-ridden within that source code since that .pcShowMainImage class is included in the pcStoreFront.css file. But anyway, you can change the width to your desired width. But that still assumes all your detail images are 350. If you have different sized images, you would need to actually modify the pcs_ProductImage routine within viewPrdCode.asp to not use a class with a specific width.

Thanks guys. I know nothing about the 'guts' of PC. But what would happen if you place no value in the width at that line? Would it go to the full image? Anyway, I think for now I can live with a single width image. But I still think it should be changed to show the detail image at whatever size it was uploaded.

I tried it without width and the 350px picture was resized to 360px (go figure).

In my store all the large pics are 350px so I will use the (width: 350px)

I looked at that again and the pic in the popupwindow (without the width parameter) is the 350px detail image. I believe if your detail pic were a different width it would not be resized.

The pcStoreFront.css has the following CSS definition:

 #pcMain .pcShowMainImage img {
  padding: 5px;
  border: 1px solid #cccccc;
 }

So it adds 5px of space on either side of your image, hence 350 + 5 + 5 = 360. If you remove the width style in the popup code, it should just display the image at the actual width which is what Cy mentioned.

Again, I want to thank you both. I opened viewPrdPopWindow.asp in MS ExpressionWeb and changed the width to "auto" and it works like a charm. The only problem I have now is that the window itself is too short. I need to edit the popup window size now. BUT...the pictures look great now and that is exactly what I wanted it to do. Thanks!

Check includes/javascripts/pcWindowsViewPrd.asp. There is a line like:

lrgewin=window.open("about:blank","","height=600,width=800,s tatus=no,titlebar=yes")

Change the height=600. Caution here though because some people's screen size will only handle 600 high.

question for netprofits.

how do I change the # of thumbnails displayed? I know there is a setting but I'm not sure which file it's in.

Rather than change the window size, I decided to add "scrollbars=yes" to the line as so:

   lrgewin=window.open("about:blank","","heig ht=600,width=800,scrollbars=yes,status=no,titlebar=yes")

And it works to my satisfaction. Now when the image is too tall, scroll bars show up allowing the bottom of the image to show. Thank you.

Hi Cy, in viewPrdCode.asp, look for the routine called pcs_AdditionalImages. The line pcv_intProdImage_Columns = 3 defines how many thumbnails per row. But I think the routine will display ALL additional images and just keep adding rows as needed. Is that what you meant?
