I occasionally use the Purge-Product utility to keep the database cleaned up. I've always done it "one product at a time." There is a button that is labeled "Remove All Products." Is that referring to only those products that are marked as "deleted," or does it truly remove every product in the database?
Thanks,
Paul

Hi Paul,
PurgeAllProducts is the "Atom Bomb" page for products and orders, and potentially Categories. It's NOT just cleaning up - it's wiping the DB. If you select the link your taken to a page reading :- This is a dangerous feature. It allows you to completely remove all products from your database. When you take this action you will completely delete all products. All orders must and will be deleted as well. This action is permanent and cannot be undone. In other words - unless you want to start again with a new set of products avoid it at all costs. :-) PurgeProducts is dangerous too. As well as removing Products it removes ORDERS that contain those products - so you lose some of your sales history & I suspect any financial figures you extract are also going to be incorrect as a consequence. I would advise not doing this for any product where you need to preserve related order details. |

Well, there is no straight answer to this, and purging products is not high on the list of steps I'd be thinking about.
Is only the back end of the store slow? Not the front end? Is there a chance that you are on a discount host and a heavily loaded server? Might you need to ask the host to move your site to a faster box with fewer sites? Maybe consider a host who places fewer sites on their servers?
Assuming you have a fast internet connection, and without having someone observe this and perhaps do something like running a tracert to see what the hops look like, it's pretty tough to speculate what the cause of the performance issue might be. Have you checked this from other locations?
