I don't see how putting your site in a dedi app pool has anything to do with what platform your db is running on.
Sorry about the phone: busy phone day this morning. I'm calling you now. |

You have to be careful when converting from 2005 to 2008. My last host did that and did not warn us about it. They screwed up the database completely and it took hours to rebuild it. We were out of business for solid 3 days! There is only one person you can call for the repair, because EI would not even touch it since they are not database specialist. Mark Shipp is the only one competent enough to do it, since his specialty is databases and PC. It took him hours to repair it, plus you have to be careful when upgrading to newer version of PC once you run 2008, because the script may not work right when fields have to be added to the database. Here is the info just in case you need it.

Thanks, Katharine. Yeah, I just spoke with Sally and enlightened here about all of this. She's getting back to Crytaltech. There's just no reason she should have to change database platforms in order to have her site run in a dedi app pool.

Katherina,
Just to be clear, I (and presumably others such as Sean, etc. - but I can speak with certainty about myself) migrate databases from SQL 2005 to SQL 2008 all the time. The transition from one to the other is really nothing magical or difficult.
For example, I operate out of a pair of data centers. SQL2k5 in the old one, 2k8 in the new one. Every time I migrate a site from the old network to the new one, I migrate the database. Not rocket science...
And FWIW, Mark and I collaborated in the development of a special script that upgrades the data types during such conversions so that the columns in the upgraded databases comply with current standards.
It's really not that big a deal, it's just that the idiots who hosed your site were clueless and irresponsible.
So while I entirely stand by the assertion that Mark is very good at what he does, and I hire him for every complex database handling requirement that comes my way, for something as lame as upgrading a SQL DB from 2k5 to 2k8, Mark is not the only talent around here who can pull that off.
Thanks.

Ok, yeah, Greg's point is true, but Mark is rather the Database Admin guru in this community and is well work the accolades in that niche, Katherina.
He knows his stuff well, and it's worth mentioning him and/or pinging him on database issues even though other experienced folks in this community are also knowledgeable. I think maybe that the important point here is that not all hosting companies are so knowledgeable. Not even quite sure if Jolt is, and they are pretty much THE hosting company that is really dialed into ProductCart hosting. We Certified ProductCart Developers tend to have a lot more insight into all of this, and several of us also offer hosting solutions (though our boutique hosting may not be the right fit for everyone; I'll be the fist to admit that). Hosting is not quite the commodity that I think most folks think it is. Knowing well the applications one hosts is crucial, and frankly your boutique hosts are going to be a lot more focussed on that and more concerned with your specific business than any hosting company, including Jolt (who is an excellent PC oriented hosting company IHMO). If you just have an out of the box type ProductCart store, Jolt is my recommendation. If you have any special requirements, then you should hit up the Certified ProductCart Developers up that provide hosting such as GBDG: http://www.greybearddesign.com/, WMS: http://www.wmsmerchantservices.com/ or Cognecy: http://cognecy.com/ |

I'm almost there after 2 attempted plan changes and numerous calls to tech support, it would seem that my best option would be upgrading to a newer, twice the speed, server which runs ASP.NET 3.5
Anyway they suggested I post over here before making that change to make sure that Product Cart will have no issues with ASP.NET 3.5. So if someone could let me know that all will be good on 3.5, I'd appreciate it. Thanks to all for help on this and especially to Sean for his endless patience! |

Yes - ProductCart will run just fine on a server running v3.5 of the .NET framework.

Yeah, but what does that have to do with how a .ASP site will run?
I just don't understand the guidance these people are giving you. First there is the question of migrating to SQL2k8 in order to get to a dedicated application pool, and now they are talking what version of .NET a box is running in order to get you to a faster server.
Are they proposing to increase your hosting fee in this process?

Thanks at least I know I can make that move safely.
No, monthly charges will remain the same. Apparently the only plan they have, at same cost, with dedicated application pool would require moving to SQL 20008. I decided against that. Another tech support person told me another plan had dedicated app pool. However, when I changed to that, I got an e-mail back saying it didn't have dedicated app pool. Had a long talk to someone this morning who suggested a semi-dedicated which would have been a mammoth jump in price but is now suggesting the ASP.NET 3.5 server because he thinks that because it is much faster and newer I may not get the timeouts I'm experiencing on the antique server I'm on at the moment. Since I haven't the foggiest, I am just going with their advice and thought it couldn't hurt to try. |

I have little patience for this sort of inept handling of this stuff. Getting more than one story from various individuals and having to jump through hoops like this is silly.
If this next step does not work out, and since it sounds like you already have a relationship with Sean, it might make sense for you to jump ship from that host and move to Sean or any of the others among us who know PC. I just would not put up with it.
