Disabling multiple brands in a store

Hello, we have a store with about 6k products with roughly 80 different brands total. 

For now, we would like to 'disable' (without removing) all the brands except maybe 1 or 2.  I went into the Control Panel > Manage Brands > List Brands and went through each brand I wanted to disable and hit the radio button to No for not active, however the brands are still viewable on the website.

	Go to Products > Update Multiple Products > Global Changes and select the brand you want to disable. Then go down to "Unassign the following option:" and check the radio button and select Active. This should make all products belonging to that brand, inactive. If you want to remove the actual Brand links from the website and setting brands to not active didn't do the trick, you might need to edit your navigation files to exclude those links.
