I am running v4.6 ... Today I received an e-mail from google telling me that my web site was not mobile friendly and I needed to fix it or it would be not be shown in mobile searches. I do not have the mobile add-on. I noticed that product cart 5. seems to be indicating it comes with a mobile option? Just wondering if that is the case or it is still a purchased add on. Can anyone comment what is the best mobile option to solve the Google issue? Has anyone that is running the mobile add-on still received this Google warning?
Thanks Chris |

Chris - v5 clearly does have mobile support built in. www.gollygear.com is almost 100% stock v5 code if you would like to examine what that looks like. Like you, it seems that a large number of our clients received that e-mail, and a number of them have directed them to my inbox in the past couple days. I just called my client at GollyGear.com and got an interesting tidbit. She received that e-mail from Google for another site she owns, but not for the v5 ProductCart store that we manage. That's not a guarantee that they (Google) are in fact happy with the v5 mobile storefront, but I'm somewhat hoping that it is indeed telling since the e-mail arrived for her other site but not for GollyGear. OTOH, Alan (another client) has a v4 mobile, and he did indeed get that e-mail. Another client who is on v5, but where mobile is not active, also got the e-mail. And then it looks like www.tastefulgarden.com/store/m did not get the e-mail. So from all of those, I've got a v5 store with mobile active, and a v4 store with mobile active, both of whom apparently did not get the mail from Google. Then there is at least one v4 store with mobile, and a v5 store without mobile who DID get that little love note. Might be nice if Netsource would respond to this post with additional details they may be aware of. |

Ok well this seems to be a major issue with google, reading on it a bit everyone seems to think there is another major algorithm update coming soon that will swing everything towards mobile friendly searches. Unfortunately for us. I did find a link to test your web site and see if google approves whether it is mobile friendly. My sites failed and so did most ...but not all of my competitors. It is interesting as you get a good look at what google approves of. Here is link:

FYI, today we activated mobile for a v5 store where the client had not yet asked us to tailor their mobile storefront. Before doing so, that site failed the mobile test. It now passes. We have extensive experience with tailoring the ProductCart mobile storefront, having done both v4 and v5 implementations. And we have a bit of time on our hands with respect to being able to tackle such a request. If you would like a hand with your mobile needs, feel free to contact me. |

There is indeed an algorithm update on the horizon. I believe the date for the change is set at April 20th (I'd recommend checking to be sure that is the correct date). I have no idea how big of a ranking factor this is going to be, but I'd say it would be wisest to err on the side of caution and take Greg up on his offer - we are currently hosted with him and have contracted him for development support from time to time, and he has always exceeded our expectations. You will be in good hands.
Unfortunately, the hour is late and there are now only 7 days remaining until this update takes effect, so I'd say strike while the iron is hot! |
