    Posted: 29-November-2008 at 11:00am
We use Authorize.Net and we use address verification and cvv match for security purposes.   If a customer has a Visa Gift Card (with the Visa logo on it) the customer cannot use this credit card on our website, because there is no billing address to verify against.  Product Cart returns an AV mismatch and declines the transaction, which is perfectly reasonable.  I contacted Authorize.Net, and there is a setting I can change that will allow the credit card to go through using "Address Unavailable."  I believe that if I change this setting, it will make all my other transactions less secure.  I am not inclined to change it for this reason, but these Visa Gift Card customers are an angry sort when their gift card won't go through.  Has anyone encountered this problem and if so, what have you done to solve it? Any ideas would be very appreciated.

Hi Loracady,
I googled this issue and found the following :-
http://usa.visa.com/personal/cards/prepaid/gift_card_how.html#anchor_6

  • To make an online or phone purchase, you will need to register your card. You can do this by either calling the issuing provider, or by visiting their website. This information should have been supplied to you when you received the card. It may also be printed on the back of the card.
  • When you make an online or phone purchase, the name, address, and phone number you use will need to be exactly the same as the information you provided when registering your card.
  • If the information you provide differs from what was provided when the card was registered, the transaction may be declined.
  • You can verify or update your information by visiting the card provider's Web site, or by contacting them using the toll-free number provided in your card materials.
I know many customers may not have either read the information when they received the card or just forgot, but there is a way of them resolving it for themselves - so perhaps some info on the way to the checkout page may help remind them.

Can you clear these cards without the realtime interface of Authorize.net.  I mean can you clear them manually?  If yes, I would make a checkout option for "VISA Gift Cards" just like you would create one for "Pay by Check" or "Call in Credit Card".  Have the next screen display a message in regard to not being able to take the card in real time, but offer a phone number they can call to give their card over the phone.  The other option would be to create a custom card to capture it, but you still have to run it manually.

Loracady,

We have the same setup and have run into the same issue.

We actually took Authorize.net advice , at first, and adjusted our settings.  But as you stated it does make all of your transactions less secure.  We had a large order slip through during Christmas 2 years ago that became a chargeback that we lost because of the AVS did not match, even though we had the shipment tracked and signed for.

After that we put our Authorize.net settings back and have all Debit, Check Cashing, Gift Cards through Paypal.  Basically any "credit card" that doesn't a have a billing address connected to it to verify against.  So far, so good and it will be 2 years in January.

Occassionally, we'll have a customer not look at the payment options and try to pay through "credit card" and their card will be declined.  As you said, they are an angry lot when their card is declined.

How did you go about doing that? Why clump debit cards in to go to paypal with a higher rate?

We adjusted the payment name at checkout.  It doesn't stop a customer from using a debit, check cashing or gift card through Authorize.net, but it will decline if none of their address matches.

It just became a trade-off between allowing everything through and then following up with all of the suspected fraud charges or tightening the fraud filters a little bit.

I'm open to suggestions as it seems the card processing industry makes life hard on us merchants to be able to authenticate transactions.
